Special Services

In addition to the traditional tasks of fire fighting and rescue, some members of KVFD volunteer to receive additional training in more specialized tasks including; Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, High and Swift Water Rescue and Technical Communications.

Hazardous Materials Team

Hazardous Materials Decon

All KVFD Firefighters receive HazMat training at the Awareness Level.  In Addition some members receive additional training, which allows them to provide support to the Harris County HazMat Team when they are dispatched to the KVFD service area.  Examples of services provided include, defensive containment of contaminated runoff, air monitoring and decontamination of citizens and responders.  Equipment 37 (EQ37) supports this team.  It carries HazMat response supplies, spare Air Bottles and refill capability, electrical power, and scene lighting.

Technical Rescue Response Team

High Angle Rescue Packaging

This team trains in and provides High and Low Angle Rescue, Confined Space Rescue and rescue of victims involved in structural collapse.  Examples of services provided include tower rescue, extraction from tanks and any rescue requiring the use of ropes and associated equipment. Heavy Rescue 34 (R34) and Rescue 33 (R33) support this team.  In addition to the Jaws of Life it carries all necessary ropes and equipment for executing technical rescues.

Water Rescue Response Team

Swift Water Rescue

Originally formed to provide high water and boat rescue during high rainfall events such as tropical storms and hurricanes, all members of this team are trained and certified in swift water rescue as well.  Examples of services provided include individual rescue from fast moving creeks, motor vehicles in waterways, and assisting victims stranded during flooding. Utility 37 (U37) and Rescue Boat 37 (RB37) support this team.  In addition a small inflatable raft for creek and pond rescues is also available.

Disaster Communication Coordination Team

MVA Rescue

This team provides back-up dispatching and general communications during long term events and/or during times when standard communication systems are overwhelmed or inoperative.  A back-up communication system is maintained at the Administration building, which uses communications towers located behind Station 7 and atop Noble Energy high rise at each end of the response area.
